High Speed Turbines

Carbon Brush - High Speed TurbinesCarbon Brush - High Speed Turbines

Carbon brushes used on high speed turbine ring applications are the most critical applications in the world. Helwig Carbon has been supplying carbon brushes for these applications for over 85 years. Our H702 and H704 low friction graphite grades have been used extensively on Allis Chalmers, ABB, GE, and Westinghouse units around the world.

Trouble Shooting Tips

Due to the extremely high peripheral speeds it is difficult to maintain good contact with the ring.

· Rings should be round within .001” with less than 6 mils vibration.
· Spring pressure should be checked periodically to insure it is the recommended 2.5 psi for 3600 RPM turbines.
· Free movement of the brushes up and down in the brush holder should also be checked.

This application is susceptible to selective action and an imbalance in current flow. This can lead to a build up of deposits on the inside of the brushholders which can impede the movement of the brush. In extreme cases the brush will be held up in the holder and lose contact with the ring. Regular maintenance checks can help identify and prevent these problems before they become serious.

Low Speed Turbines

Helwig Carbon has a long history of supplying carbon brushes for slow speed hydroelectric turbines. We have several low friction graphite grades that perform successfully on these applications.

Big and Beautiful 2-string Cigar Box Bass Guitar

This is a big, bold and beautiful 2-string cigar box bass guitar, using a nice double-box body and a red oak neck. This is our first bass guitar build, and it turned out great. Decent acoustic sound, and nice deep thumpy bass through an amplifier. The scale length of this bass is 34″, and the overall length of the instrument is 48 inches, hence the extra shipping costs. The strings we have on it could stand to be a little longer, as the windings begin to reduce before the nut, but this doesn’t seem to affect the playability or intonation any.

The cigar box(es) we used on this are the nice big Arturo Fuente Queen B. We took two of them and attached them together to form one nice big soundbox. Other features include big bass-style chrome tuners, an embedded piezo pickup with volume control, hand-carved “bass cleff” sound hole, nickel box corners, inset fret position markers, jumbo nickel-silver fret wire, and more! This is a fun instrument to play and also looks great hanging on a wall.

“Pure and Simple” Cigar Box Guitar: Flying Bridge Model #1

The vision behind this cigar box guitar was to build a great-sounding, fun-to-play instrument that we could sell at a crazy low price. To do that, we went with a “stick on box” method of neck mounting, a straight headstock, and a single sound-hole. What sets this instrument apart though is the innovative “flying bridge”, which transfers the string vibrations around the neck and down to the box lid, which in our testing almost doubled the volume! The result is a great-sounding, fun-to-play and highly affordable cigar box guitar that we are proud to offer under the C. B. Gitty brand name!

*** WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE BUYING ONE OF OUR CIGAR BOX GUITARS ***
A cigar box guitar is a rude, often crude, gritty home-made instrument, and there aren’t really any rules when it comes to making them. They are about as far as you can get from the glossy, soul-less factory-made instruments hanging on the walls of most music stores today. The CBGs we sell are meant to invoke the sorts of instruments that the founding fathers of blues would have built from stuff they had laying around – an old empty cigar box for the body, a piece of scrap lumber for the neck, scrap pieces of woods, lengths of bolt, old keys, etc for the nut and bridge, miscellaneous hardware such as a hinge half for the tailpiece.

Every instrument that bears the C. B. Gitty name is built to a minimum standard of quality and playability, but you need to know that cigar box guitars are for the most part primitive and primal instruments that bear little resemblance to the shiny mass-produced things you see hanging on the wall of a guitar store. Each one is a unique, hand-made creation, as much instrument as art. They may have some rough edges, some nicks and scuffs, some “interesting” intonations, high actions, a bit of twang or sitar-buzz on certain strings, etc. That is part of what the CBG is all about. There are builders out there who turn out high-end professional-grade cigar box instruments, and charge hundreds of dollars for them, and that is fine. You just need to know that these instruments are built with a different purpose in mind. If all of that sounds good to you, then great! If it makes your blood pressure shoot up and causes you to start muttering about “real” instruments and the finely honed traditions of luthiery… then you probably shouldn’t buy one of these!
